About Current Pilotages in Norway
Maritime pilotage is a critical safety service along the Norwegian coast. Licensed pilots are dispatched to guide vessels through challenging waters, narrow fjords, and busy harbors. Norway's coastline stretches over 100,000 km including fjords and islands, making pilotage essential for safe navigation.
How Norwegian Pilotage Works
The Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket) oversees all pilotage operations through three regional dispatch centres:
- Horten losformidling — manages pilotage in the Oslofjord and Southeast Norway, covering major ports like Oslo, Drammen, Fredrikstad, and Larvik.
- Kvitsøy losformidling — covers Southwest and Western Norway including Stavanger, Bergen, Haugesund, and Kristiansand.
- Lødingen losformidling — manages Northern Norway and Arctic waters, serving Trondheim, Bodø, Tromsø, Narvik, and Kirkenes.
